One lookbehind's forward walk over the subject: its threads parked at at, and whether a match of the sub-pattern ends there.
The walk starts a thread at every position, so its threads at at hold every partial match that could still end later. Queried at increasing positions, it advances: each byte is stepped once per search, not once per candidate start.
